Now that the holidays are behind us and the new year is here, how are you? No, really. How are you?
This year, the holiday season felt different for me. As a principal, I was navigating the unknown territory of new programming while still trying to maintain normal day-to-day operations. As a parent, I had my college sophomore home for a few weeks, while also preparing my senior in high school to start thinking about his next steps. Personally, I am preparing for my final semester of coursework in my doctoral program.
…and, I am struggling to find ways to take a deep breath and slow down.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28, NLT
As educators, we’re so good at being “on” for everyone else—our students, colleagues, and families. Yet, we often struggle to give ourselves the same permission to rest.
As we settle into this new year, I invite you to intentionally pause, reset, and rest in Him in the following ways:
1. Pause for Prayer and Reflection
Set aside time each day to talk to God—whether it’s in the quiet of the morning, during a winter walk, or before bed. Let Him carry the weight you’ve been holding. Use this time to reflect on His goodness and realign your heart with His peace.
2. Embrace Restful Worship
Instead of filling every moment with tasks or to-dos, lean into worship that fills your spirit. Listen to your favorite worship songs, attend a church service, or even find quiet moments to share your gratitude for His faithfulness.
3. Reconnect with God’s Creation
Take time to be in nature, whether it’s walking through a snowy trail, sitting by a fire, or simply watching the sunset. These moments remind us of His artistry and give us space to hear His voice away from the busyness of life.
This new year, give yourself permission to rest—not just physically, but spiritually. Let His presence restore you, so you can return to your calling renewed and ready to serve.
How will you rest in Him this week?

Thank you for this article; it brought tears to my eyes. I am constantly told to take a break (my husband and paras); being in special education is not easy, but I love it. I need to take more time in prayer and worship.
Elaine-so grateful for your comment and I am blessed this helped!
