“Good luck.”
Those were the only words the previous teacher said to me as she handed over two large file folders. It was my first year as a special education teacher after leaving a career as a music therapist, and those folders felt like they weighed a ton. Inside were multiple IEPs, piles of parent communications, and detailed notes on interactions between the family, the team, and district officials. Almost immediately, I began to doubt and question myself. Did I make the right career move? Should I even be a teacher? How will I even be remotely prepared to handle the challenges in front of me for this one student?
…did I mention the student was only going into kindergarten?
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10, NIV
As educators, sometimes we look at the names on our class roster and wonder, Why me?
The challenges that lie ahead can feel overwhelming, and we may question whether we’re equipped to handle them. But instead of questioning the calling God has given you this year, why not ask:
- What is God teaching me through this student?
- How can I reflect God’s love in this situation?
- What strengths is God cultivating in me through this challenge?
- How can I trust God more fully as I navigate this school year?
- What opportunities for growth is God providing through these circumstances?
By shifting the focus from questioning our ability to seeking God’s purpose, we open ourselves to His guidance, strength, and wisdom.
That kindergarten student? He and I had a challenging first year together. But through those challenges, I discovered that the gifts I developed in my previous career as a music therapist—such as patience, listening, and advocacy—were invaluable in my role as a special education teacher. I also learned the incredible value of listening to families, which, in turn, made me a better parent down the road.
Remember, God has placed you in this role for a reason, and He will equip you with everything you need to fulfill your calling. Embrace this year with confidence, knowing that you are not alone—God is with you every step of the way!
As you prepare for the school year ahead, take a moment to reflect on the challenges you’re facing. Instead of asking, Why me? try asking, What is God teaching me through this? Spend time in prayer, journaling, or talking with a trusted friend to explore the lessons God might be revealing to you. Trust that He has equipped you with the skills and strengths you need, and embrace the opportunities for growth that lie ahead.
