As we prepare for another school year, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement, anticipation, and even a bit of anxiety. New roles, new students, and new colleagues can make us wonder how this year will unfold. Many times, self-doubt and fear of not being “enough” for our students can sneak into our thoughts. Too often, we get caught up in “what we are not” instead of “what we are.” We think, I am not good at this like her. Or, I wish I could be better at that like him. Whatever it is, we can get stuck when we don’t focus on the unique gifts God has given us.
This year, I’ve taken on an additional role and moved into a new office. Although I’m excited about the new opportunity, I realized that I was worrying too much about my weaknesses instead of focusing on how God is equipping me for this new assignment. So as I unpacked boxes in my new office one day, I started to think about what I would need to “unpack” on a personal level to prepare for this new role.
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8, NIV
I can imagine that the apostles might have had similar thoughts. But because they chose to embrace their specific gifts and attributes, God was able to use them in mighty ways. Peter, despite his impulsiveness, was a rock of faith and leadership. Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, became a passionate evangelist and teacher. John, known for his deep love and compassion, offered profound insights into the nature of Christ.
Each apostle had distinct strengths and weaknesses, and God used each one of them to build His Church. They didn’t need to mirror each other’s gifts. Instead, they complemented one another, creating a powerful, unified body of believers.
As we step into this new year, let’s unpack our boxes and our potentials, embracing the unique gifts and talents God has bestowed upon each of us.
