PD Burnout

I completely understand where you’re coming from—I have been there. Professional development can be valuable, but when you’re already feeling stretched thin, it can also feel like one more thing to juggle.

When I was a teacher, I found that shifting my mindset seemed to help the most. For example, I tried to see PD as a chance to recharge and connect and not as something to just “get through.” Of course, that’s easier said than done, especially when the schedule is packed.

Have you considered setting a goal of finding one or two realistic takeaways instead of trying to absorb everything? This way, you’re not putting too much pressure on yourself to implement every idea so you can focus on what will actually be useful.

Also, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re probably not alone. Is there a colleague you can team up with? Maybe someone to debrief with or divide up the learning so you’re not processing everything solo? I’ve found that having someone to reflect with makes it easier to apply what I’m learning in a way that doesn’t feel so heavy.

From a leadership perspective, I always try to balance the mandatory hours with segments that teachers find helpful—whether that’s extra time for collaboration or even just space to breathe. If you have concerns, don’t be afraid to share feedback with your administrator. A lot of times, leaders are open to adjusting after hearing firsthand insight from teachers.

How have past PD days gone for you? Is there another approach that has worked for you? If so, please share in the comments so we can build up our community by providing resources and ideas for one other.

You are not alone. We’re all in this together, working toward the same mission—even when our perspectives differ!

This bi-monthly blog, written by principal Jessica Cabeen, answers teachers’ tough and unfiltered questions about administration with honesty, transparency, and a heart for unity.

  1. Something that I have really found beneficial is walking with colleagues during a PD break. It helps your physical body feel better, gets you moving and is great for conversation and connection.
