Did you know there are many different ways you can financially contribute to the mission of Christian Educators? Writing a check is quick and easy, but other types of gifts have unique advantages, including sometimes significant tax savings. Donating appreciated assets like real estate, personal property, stock, mutual fund shares or IRA contributions allows you to avoid capital gains taxes if you had sold these items.
Most Americans have nearly all of their wealth in assets other than available cash. This may include stocks, retirement & investment accounts, life insurance policies, real estate, vehicles, and other physical property. Despite this fact, when it comes to supporting the Lord’s work, we typically think only of the cash we have in our paycheck or bank account.
It is likely that your best option to make your most substantial contribution to Christian Educators is a gift other than cash. Not only do these types of gifts empower the mission of the organization, they often provide significant tax benefits for you, the donor.
In all of the examples below, you will find significant benefits to you and Christian Educators if you gift your item to the organization before you sell it.
A Few Examples:
- Ownership of a car, boat, or building can be signed over to Christian Educators, giving you a charitable tax deduction for the full appraised value of the item. It is then the organization's responsibility to sell the item. (Note: check with the [Organization] to make sure the item falls within the [Organization’s] gift acceptance policy).
- If you’re age 73 or older, you have a required minimum distribution of your IRA, 401k or 403b. If this federally mandatory withdrawal on your retirement account is unwanted or unneeded, it can come with an adverse tax consequence. Instead, consider rolling over your unsold IRA to Christian Educators. This charitable donation can help you lower your tax bill and offer a substantial contribution.
- When sold, highly appreciated securities (stock, mutual funds, etc.) can come with unwanted high capital gains taxes. For example, selling $10,000 of stock you originally purchased for $1000 can cost you more than $1,500 in tax penalties. Instead, consider gifting the unsold stock to the [Organization].
