Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways. Psalm 37:7, NIV
On my way to a recent book signing, I was filled with excitement about connecting with fellow Christian educators—people who understand both the joy and the weight of being called to serve children. But not long into the trip, that excitement faded into frustration as I found myself sitting in traffic.
At first, my GPS showed a short delay. Then, the red line appeared, stretching farther and farther, minute by minute. As I crept forward, I thought about how much this felt like life. We make plans, set goals, and move full speed toward what we believe God has called us to do, and then suddenly, everything comes to a halt.
As educators, we know that feeling all too well. A door doesn’t open. Progress feels slow. The lesson plans, the leadership initiatives, or the ministry moments don’t seem to move forward like we expected. We wonder why God would allow a “red-line season” right when we were gaining momentum.
But as I sat there inching along, I sensed God whispering, “You’re still on the fastest route.”
That moment reminded me that waiting seasons aren’t wasted seasons. When God slows us down, it’s rarely to stop us—it’s to strengthen us. Sometimes, He’s protecting us from what’s ahead. Other times, He’s preparing something within us. Either way, the pause has purpose.
Our natural response in the “traffic jams” of life is to start scanning other lanes. Maybe if I change jobs, shift directions, or take on something new, I’ll get through this season faster. But more often than not, those quick lane changes lead to more frustration. Impatience, not wisdom, usually drives our movement.
Psalm 37:7 reminds us to “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” That’s not easy in a world that celebrates speed and results—especially in education, where we’re constantly managing goals, outcomes, and progress. But God’s timing isn’t measured by efficiency. It’s measured by transformation.
So if you find yourself in a “red-line” season right now—whether in your classroom, your leadership role, or your personal life—remember this:
- God hasn’t forgotten you.
- The slowdown isn’t a setback.
- The One who called you knows exactly where you’re headed.
Just because you can’t see the movement doesn’t mean nothing’s happening. Down the road, God is working, aligning opportunities, shaping hearts, and deepening faith. The red line will eventually turn blue again. You’re still on the fastest route!Â
Lord, thank You for reminding me that waiting is not wasted. When my plans stall or progress feels slow, help me to rest in Your timing and trust that You are still leading the way. Teach me to be still, stay faithful where You’ve placed me, and remember that even in the red-line moments, I am still on the fastest route in Your perfect plan. Amen.
