TRUSTING GOD IN THE UNEXPECTED

He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. Isaiah 40:11, NIV

As teachers, we often pour our hearts into lesson planning—crafting activities, preparing materials, and imagining the joy on our students’ faces as they explore and learn. I had one of those days recently. I was so excited to teach a new lesson. Everything was set—the books were lined up, the art supplies were ready, and I even planned a special outdoor activity.

But just as the day began, the calls started coming in. One by one, parents informed me that their little ones wouldn’t be coming. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease had made its way into our classroom. My heart sank. Half the class was out sick.

Instead of teaching the lesson I had so lovingly prepared, I spent the day calling parents, checking in, and comforting worried parents. Some needed reassurance, others just needed a listening ear. Back in class, my focus shifted from instruction to protection—cleaning toys, wiping down surfaces, and doing everything I could to keep the rest of the children healthy and safe.

Everything felt uncertain. What if more kids fall ill? What if I bring it home to my family? But in the midst of that anxious whirlwind, I was reminded of something deeply comforting: God is in control.

Before these children were ever placed in my care, they were His. Before they ever said “Teacher, Rochelle,” they were known and loved by their Creator. He sees them. He holds them. And He cares for them more deeply than I ever could.

That truth gave me peace that day. Even when plans fall apart, even when fear creeps in, God is steady. He’s not surprised. He’s not shaken. And I can rest in that.

Dear Lord, Thank You for every child You have placed in my care. I lift up the ones who are sick—bring healing to their little bodies and peace to their parents’ hearts. Help me to be a source of comfort, strength, and stability in times of fear. When things don’t go according to plan, remind me that Your plan is always better. You are the Good Shepherd, and these little lambs are Yours. Teach me to trust You more deeply, and to love like You do—especially when it’s hard. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
