THE PARKING LOT SANCTUARY

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7, KJV

How do you begin your school day? Do you rush from the car to the classroom, mind already spinning with tasks and to-dos?

That used to be me. But one day, the Lord impressed on my heart the power of beginning each school day with prayer before I enter the building.

Now, when I pull into the parking lot, I pause. I turn off the engine, take a deep breath, and invite God into my day. I pray that He would place a hedge of protection around the building and keep all evil out. I ask Him to fill every space, nook, and cranny with His presence. I lift up every person who enters—students, teachers, and staff—asking that each one would feel His love and be drawn to Him. I pray for believers, both young and old, to be bold and let their light shine brightly. Finally, I ask the Lord to fill me with His peace so that I can reflect His love to others. And He does.

When I walk into the building, there’s a pep in my step, joy in my heart, and a smile on my face. My attitude is set, and I sense His presence with me. Throughout the day, when challenges arise, He gently reminds me of His peace.

Starting the day in prayer doesn’t just change the morning—it changes me

Dear gracious and loving Heavenly Father, thank You for being our refuge and for inviting us to bring every request before You. Guide our hearts and minds to align with Your thoughts and Your ways, that we might faithfully serve as Your ambassadors. Amen.

  1. Love this!! The title caught my attention because it’s similar to one of my books, Parking Lot Prayers. Thank you for reminding me of the importance of those “parking lot prayers,” and that alone time with God each morning. I plan on doing what you suggested, before rushing into the building, turn off my engine and pray. And then let the school day begin!

  2. Love this devotional for its simplicity. It is such a powerful reminder of how prayer set the tone for the entire day. And remind us to take Jesus to school!

  3. I have an alarm set on my phone each day of school. The alarm is titled… pray for your students
I have been blessed to open my classroom weekly for a teacher prayer meeting. My co-teacher and I often pray every day before our busy schedule starts.
