THE MOUNTAIN IS STILL THERE

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12, NIV

As I was driving to work one morning, I looked out and saw the mountain in the distance. It was so stunning that it took my breath away.

It seemed to grow closer as I crested the hill and continued toward school. First, I could see the tip. Then the middle. Finally, the entire mountain came into view, silhouetted against the morning sky and highlighted by layers of deep red. It was a crisp morning, and the view was vivid and clear.

As I took in the beautiful scene, I remembered that the day before was overcast, and a heavy fog had settled in. The outline of the mountain was barely visible.

It made me think about the seasons we experience in life—those times when the fog is so heavy that we can barely see what is ahead. But during those times, we still trust that the mountain is there.

The fog doesn’t change the mountain. It doesn’t change its location, its size, or its beauty. The only thing that changes is our ability to see it.

Isn’t life the same?

There are days when everything seems clear and days when we can barely see at all. There are days when we sense and hear the Holy Spirit’s leading so clearly in our classrooms, and there are other days when all we can do is keep showing up. Yet even on those foggy days, we can trust that the mountain has not moved.

Jesus is still there. He is still working. His presence has not changed simply because we cannot see or sense Him as clearly as we did before.

So when the fog rolls in, remember the clear days. Remember the moments when God made His presence known. And remember that even when you cannot see the mountain, it is still there.

Jesus, help us to remember, even on days when it feels foggy in our classrooms, that You are there. Help our hearts and spirits to know that the mountain has not moved. Remind our hearts of the clear, crisp days and the whispers that You have spoken over our classrooms. Help us to remember that on the days when we can’t hear You for ourselves, we still know You are there, and we can still speak to Your glory, giving others directions to the mountain because we know the mountain has not moved. Amen.
