ROOTED IN THE BOOK OF COLOSSIANS

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7, NIV

I have always been drawn to Colossians, especially Colossians 2:6-7. I frequently refer to and reflect on these verses and they have helped me through many different seasons of life. Regardless of what I am going through, they remind me of the importance of being rooted in the truth of God’s Word so my faith can grow and overflow.

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord…”

To receive Jesus as Lord is to acknowledge Him as the ultimate authority in our lives, repenting of our sins, surrendering to His will, and following His teachings.

“…continue to live your lives in him…”

Living for Christ starts with a personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This faith is expressed through trust in Him, His teachings, His sacrifice for our sins, and His resurrection. Following Christ often involves sacrificing personal desires and putting God and the needs of others first. This reflects the sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrated on the cross. Overall, living for Christ is about aligning our thoughts, actions, and values with those of Jesus, seeking to glorify God in all aspects of our lives.

“…rooted and built up in him…”

Being rooted means having a strong foundation in Christ through studying and applying His Word, the Bible. Just as a tree with deep roots is stable and able to withstand storms, being rooted in the Bible can provide stability and strength to keep us from being deceived by false teachings.

“…strengthened in the faith as you were taught…”

We are to set our minds on heavenly things, putting to death earthly desires and living in a way that reflects and strengthens our faith in Christ. He emphasizes the importance of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love in our relationships with one another.

“…overflowing with thankfulness.”

To overflow means to exceed expectations or limits. Making the most of every opportunity to share Christ and to overflow with gratitude will make an impact on others.

Today, my hope for you is that you are deeply rooted in God’s love, know who you are in Christ, and branch out in thankfulness and service.

Lord, help my roots grow deep in You, Jesus Christ, and may my life be firmly built upon You. Strengthen my faith and love for You and others, and may I live and serve in my school filled with overflowing gratitude for all You have done and will do! Amen.
