MAKING EVERY EFFORT

By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life… In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises.  2 Peter 1:3 & 5, NLT

The start of a school year always feels like a fresh notebook—blank pages, ready to be filled. There’s something about new lesson plans, sharpened pencils, and the first-day buzz that makes me want to do things better this time around.

But here’s the thing—I’ve realized that while we’re great at setting academic goals for our students, we don’t always set spiritual goals for ourselves. Peter’s words in 2 Peter 1 remind us: God has already given everything we need to live a godly life, but we still have to “make every effort” to grow.

It’s like He’s stocked our classrooms with every supply needed, but it’s up to us to pick them up and use them.

Peter gives us seven growth targets: moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, patient endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love for everyone.

Here’s how a few of them might show up this school year.

Moral Excellence — Choosing what’s right even when it’s unpopular.
Example: In the teacher’s lounge, a conversation could turn negative about a colleague. We can resist the urge to join in and quietly change the subject. It’s a small moment, but it’s integrity in action.

Self-Control — Responding with discipline instead of reacting in frustration.
Example: A student blurts out during a lesson. Instead of snapping, we choose to pause, take a breath, and respond calmly. Restraint teaches more than your words in that moment.

Patient Endurance — Persevering when results seem slow.
Example: Sometimes we work for weeks with a struggling reader. Progress is minimal, but we keep trying, adjusting our approach, and celebrating every small win.

The truth is, these growth targets aren’t extra credit for “super-Christians.” They’re for me. They’re for you. And God is ready to equip and empower us along the way.

Which of Peter’s “learning targets” do you need to focus on this season? What practical steps can you take this week to “make every effort” in that area?

Lord, thank You for giving me everything I need for life and godliness. Help me approach my spiritual growth with the same dedication I give my students. Show me where I need to grow, and give me the strength to make every effort. May my life reflect Your character and bear fruit for Your Kingdom. Amen.
