FINDING REST AFTER THE FINAL BELL

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25–26, NIV

Today’s verse acknowledges what every educator feels at times: “My flesh and my heart may fail.”

By the end of a long school year, can you feel those words? Your body is tired. Your mind is weary. Your heart may even feel a little empty after spending so much of yourself caring for others.

But the verse does not end there:

“But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Educators, your hope was never meant to rest in perfect test scores, smooth classroom management, supportive parents, or even visible results. Your portion is not found in recognition, achievement, or whether you feel successful at the end of the year. Your portion is God Himself.

And He has been faithful.

He was present during every early morning, difficult meeting, silent prayer over a struggling student, act of patience no one else noticed, and situation where you chose compassion when it would have been easier to give up. Even when you felt inadequate, God supplied what you lacked.

As summer begins, do not rush past the opportunity to rest in Him. This break is not only a pause from work; it is an invitation to be renewed. Let God restore the parts of your heart that have grown weary. Spend time with Him not because you have another lesson to prepare or another challenge to face, but simply because He is your portion.

And as you rest, remember this: the seeds you planted this year may bear fruit long after you can see it. God is still working in the lives of your students, even over the summer months. Your faithfulness mattered.

So take a deep breath today. Celebrate what God has done. Release what you cannot control. And enter this summer confident that the same God who sustained you throughout the school year will continue to strengthen your heart in the days ahead.

Lord, thank You for carrying me through this school year. When my strength failed, You remained faithful. Thank You for every opportunity I had to love, encourage, teach, and reflect Your presence in my school. As summer begins, help me truly rest in You. Renew my heart, restore my joy, and remind me that my identity is not found in my performance but in Your unfailing love. You alone are my strength and my portion forever. Amen.

  1. Thank you Christian Educators for all of the encouraging devotionals throughout the year. I praise God for this organization (it’s administrators, members, and writers). I pray that the LORD will bless and provide for each of you as you continue to allow the Holy Spirit to use you through the gifts and talents that have been given to them.

  2. Thank you, Christian Educators, for the wonderful daily devotionals this school year. This last one about resting in Him is so encouraging, just as all the devotionals have been to me this year. As I drove to school on our last day (one week ago today) I heard a song that made me reflect on God’s goodness to my year. My students and their parents were truly wonderful. They weren’t without challenges, as each child is unique and has different needs, but God gave me the strength and patience to show His love to them all. I was particularly moved when at dismissal on the last day, I received a hug from one boy who never so much as gave me a high five during the year. I believe that starting each day with reading my Bible and these devotionals helped me get through each day with God by my side. I look forward to reading these devotionals again next year!
