My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:20-23, NLT
When you need direction, where do you turn first?
We live in a world filled with voices offering advice about what we should do, where we should go, and how we should live. We can ask a counselor about our careers, a mentor about our goals, a friend about a difficult decision, or an expert about a particular problem. There is nothing wrong with seeking wise counsel. In fact, God often uses other people to help guide and encourage us.
But before we listen to all those voices, we need to listen to Him.
Proverbs tells us to pay attention to God’s words, keep them within our hearts, and guard our hearts carefully. Why? Because what fills our hearts eventually influences the direction of our lives.
God’s Word gives us the foundation we need for making decisions. As we fill our hearts and minds with Scripture, His truth shapes our priorities, influences our choices, and helps us recognize whether the paths before us align with what He has taught us.
We still have decisions to make. We still need to seek wise counsel. We still have to step forward in faith when we cannot see the entire path ahead.
But we don’t have to navigate those decisions alone.
If you’re seeking direction today, start by getting quiet before God. Open His Word. Pray. Listen. Ask Him to examine your heart and align your desires with His. Then, as you seek wise counsel and consider your options, carry what you’ve learned from Him with you.
We may not always know exactly where God is leading us, but we can know the One who is leading us. And when we keep our hearts rooted in His truth, we can move forward with confidence not because we have every answer, but because we know the One who does.
Lord, thank You for guiding us with Your wisdom. When we are uncertain about what to do or where to go, help us turn to You first. Quiet the many voices competing for our attention and teach us to recognize Your truth through Your Word. Give us wisdom as we seek counsel from others, and help us carefully guard our hearts so that our thoughts, desires, and decisions are shaped by You. Even when we cannot see the entire path ahead, help us trust You one step at a time. Amen.
