If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept criticism, you will be honored. Proverbs 13:18, NLT
Criticism is rarely easy to hear. Our first instinct is often to defend ourselves, explain our actions, or argue with the person offering it. In the process, we can spend a great deal of time and energy focusing on the criticism rather than considering whether there might be something we can learn.
But Scripture encourages us to take a different approach.
Proverbs reminds us that accepting correction can lead to wisdom and honor. Instead of immediately rejecting criticism, we can pause and ask, Is there something here that could help me grow? Even when criticism feels unfair or inaccurate, there may still be an opportunity to reflect and improve.
In many professions, criticism is actually welcomed. Great performers rely on coaches to refine their skills. Writers depend on editors to point out mistakes and strengthen their work. These voices help them grow stronger and more effective.
The same can be true for us.
When we respond to criticism with humility instead of defensiveness, we open the door for growth. Sometimes the best response is simply to listen and thank the person for sharing their perspective. This simple act can prevent unnecessary conflict and reflect the grace of Christ in our interactions.
If our desire is to honor God and love others well, we can even go one step further—we can pray for those who critique us. Asking God to give us humble hearts helps us see criticism not as an attack, but as an opportunity to grow closer to Him.
Dear Lord, help us receive correction with humility and wisdom. Guard our hearts from defensiveness and teach us to listen carefully to others. Show us what we can learn and how we can grow through the words we hear. May our responses reflect Your grace and bring honor to Your name. Amen.
