CHOICES

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9, ESV

I headed out one day with a mile-long to-do list to prepare my classroom for the week ahead, feeling completely overwhelmed by the small amount of time I had to accomplish everything before the first bell rang. Then, during my 20-minute drive to school, it seemed like I got stopped by every red light. I felt like I was somehow being held back from all the things I needed to get done.

As I sat there (feeling pretty overwhelmed) at yet another red light, I found myself listening to the sound of the turn signal in my car. The “bing bing bing” and blinking arrow on my dashboard mesmerized me. As I continued to listen, I was reminded by this small sound and arrow that I have a choice. It reminded me of the deep value of slowing down, making intentional choices, and listening to the heart of God. It reminded me that others are watching me to see which direction I will go in each situation I face.

So, I could sit at this light and feel completely behind and out of control, or I could surrender these feelings to God and trust once again that He has a plan and that my time is in His hands. It was up to me which way I wanted to go. As I sat at that light, I repented for the rush in my heart and asked God to direct my turns for the day.

Lord, in the still moments—even at a red light—You gently remind me that I’m not in control, but You are. Thank You for using even the smallest sounds to quiet my soul and turn my heart back to You. Forgive me for rushing ahead, trying to do things in my own strength. Help me to slow down and trust that You are ordering my steps, even when my plans feel urgent and overwhelming. Let my choices reflect Your guidance, and may others see Your peace in me as I follow Your direction. Lead me today, Lord, one turn at a time. Amen.
