The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5, NIV
October is full of the beauty of fall—crimson trees, crisp air, cozy layers. But for many Christian teachers, it also means a mix of decorations, costumes, and themes that don’t sit well with our spirits.
Have you ever felt uneasy about the celebration of fear, darkness, or death that can surround this time of year? Or felt a little out of step or unsure about how to participate in a way that still honors your faith?
If so, consider the message in today’s verse: Light is still light, even when surrounded by shadows. And the best part—light wins!
Jesus is not intimidated by this season, and He doesn’t want you to hide. He’s inviting you to shine. Not with perfection or pressure, but with faithfulness, courage, peace, and a love that stands out in contrast to fear.
Fall may bring flickering jack-o’-lanterns, but remember, you carry the unflickering light of Christ. And that light cannot be overcome!
Lord Jesus, in a season that often celebrates fear and darkness, help me to walk in light and love. Give me discernment and wisdom as I navigate this time of year in my classroom. Let my presence be peaceful and kind, full of grace and truth. Remind me that even small acts of love and gentleness can shine brightly. Thank You for being the Light that the darkness cannot overcome. Amen.
