The Firehose Start—How Do I Ask My Principal to Slow Down?

I hear you. At the beginning of the school year, it can feel like trying to sip from a firehose, especially when mandates and initiatives hit all at once. And as a principal, I’ll admit: I’ve been guilty of being that “firehose leader,” thinking if we front-load everything before school starts, we’ll be better prepared. In reality, it often leaves teachers exhausted before they even get into a rhythm.

First, know that your feelings are valid. Even good changes can be overwhelming if we don’t have space to process and practice. And just because something appears urgent on paper doesn’t mean it all has to be put into practice immediately. Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes reminds us there is “a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Before approaching your principal, consider checking in with your grade-level team or department chair. If others share your sentiment, you could bring a few constructive suggestions together, such as:

  • Phasing in the new mandates in smaller steps.
  • Scheduling “pause and practice” sessions to process PD content before more is added.
  • Offering teachers a chance to identify what’s most essential to start with.

When you meet with your principal, frame it as a request for support, not resistance. You might say: “We’re excited to implement the new reading mandates, but many of us are feeling overwhelmed by the pace. Could we slow down the rollout so we can give each piece the attention it deserves—and do it well?”

Principals often don’t realize how their pace feels on the receiving end. Your perspective can actually help them lead better.

And remember: God gives wisdom generously to those who ask (James 1:5). Pray for discernment in your words and courage in your approach. You may find that your request not only helps you, but also brings relief to your colleagues.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a “firehose” of new initiatives at the start of the year? How did you find balance and keep your focus on Christ and the work in your classroom?

  1. This happens pretty much at the beginning of every single year. If you think about it, it is truly impossible to every thing that is required as a teacher. There isn’t enough time
in the day. All we can do is prioritize and do as much as we can without stressing over it. You can only get done whatever you get done. Most principals know this.

  2. I love that the suggestions you’ve given are respectful and would not our witness as children of God. Thank you for offering this wisdom in a situation we’ve all been in at one time or another!
