From Classroom to Calm: Finding God’s Presence in Summer

The transition from the school year’s hustle to the summer’s calm has always felt abrupt.

In those final days of school, we’re balancing a whirlwind of events, activities, and emotions alongside the meticulous checklists and goodbyes that mark the year’s end. When the last bell rings and the dust settles, there’s a quiet unease that lingers, as if we’re catching our breath after a sprint.

And then summer begins.

The abrupt shift can feel even more pronounced when our calendars suddenly have more margin and fewer routines than during the school year. For me, switching gears during summer can be challenging. I often start with lofty goals and aspirations, only to find myself realizing in August that I haven’t accomplished much.

Yet, amidst this change of pace lies an opportunity to deepen our connection with God. How can we slow down, be still, and find meaningful ways to incorporate God into our summer schedules?

Slowing Down

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Psalm 62:5, NIV

As educators, we thrive on routines and rituals, even in summer. Start by scheduling intentional time to slow down. Whether it’s in the quiet of the morning, during a peaceful moment at noon, or in the tranquility of night, make space to disconnect from technology. Consider taking a walk, engaging in a new devotional, or regularly journaling prayers.

Being Still

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10, NIV

This is particularly challenging for me. Even when I am physically still, my mind often races, consumed with thoughts of what I should have done, should be doing, or want to do. This mental whirlwind can lead to paralysis, drawing me away from precious time with God. After scheduling time for God, how can we prepare our minds and bodies to truly be present? It could be finding a quiet location, taking a few intentional breaths, or simply setting the intention to quiet the mental chatter and focus on walking forward with Him. Finding strategies to shift mental gears and refocus our time will help us align our intentions for the summer in the right space.

How have you found time to slow down and seek God in your summer schedule? We would love to hear from you—please share your experiences and insights in the comments below!
