Why Wait?

Do you believe in the saying, “Nothing worth having comes easy?”

If so, you’re not alone.

I’ll admit it: I’m terrible at waiting patiently. Whether it’s standing in line at the grocery store, sitting in traffic, or waiting for a response from a supervisor, my reaction tends to be consistent: impatience, anxiety, and sometimes, if I’m being completely honest, edginess.

My family can always tell when I’m in a season of waiting, and it’s rarely for a good reason. I tend to get lost in my thoughts, considering all the possible outcomes and scenarios. This usually means I’m not fully present at home or in other settings. People notice my absence of mind through my generic responses or curt replies. It’s not my finest trait, and it’s something I strive to improve upon every day.

In John 16:33 (NIV), Jesus tells us, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

The truth is, even when waiting feels insurmountable, we can find solace in God’s promises.

If you’re currently in a season of waiting, have you considered that it could be an opportunity for growth, refinement, and deeper intimacy with God rather than merely an opportunity to endure the passage of time? If so, the following three strategies can help you move beyond impatience and lean into His assurance.

  1. Stop Negative, Unhelpful Thoughts

When we’re waiting, our minds often become consumed with negative and unproductive thoughts. It’s crucial to recognize when this pattern arises and consciously put a stop to it. Instead of dwelling on worst-case scenarios or uncertainties, we can redirect our focus by engaging in activities that bring us peace and joy, whether it’s prayer, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

  1. Surrender Our Worries to Him

One powerful way to combat anxiety during periods of waiting is to surrender our worries to God. We can trust that He has a plan for us, even if it’s not immediately apparent. When faced with a daunting decision or an uncertain outcome, we can take a moment to pray and relinquish control, trusting that God is working behind the scenes and orchestrating events for our ultimate good.

  1. Seek God’s Word for Guidance

In times of waiting, it’s essential to seek guidance from God’s Word. We can turn to Scripture for comfort, wisdom, and direction and reflect on passages that speak to patience, trust, and God’s faithfulness. We can journal our thoughts and insights while meditating on Scripture. We can also seek support by attending the Christian Educators AWAKE Experience—a one-day, transformational event designed to help educators discover God’s truth through a variety of resources, including this free “Walking in the Opposite Spirit” download.

As we surrender our impatience and fears to Him, we’ll discover peace that surpasses understanding and a renewed sense of purpose in His plan.

So, why wait? Let’s embrace God’s promise and find joy in the journey, even amidst the waiting.
