DAYENU

And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Luke 22:15, NIV

“Dayenu” is a Hebrew word that means “it would have been enough.” It is also a song traditionally sung during Passover seders recounting the many blessings God poured on His people, the Israelites.

These are an abridged version of the lyrics:

It would have been enough…
-if the Lord had only brought us out of Egypt
-if the Lord had only given us the Torah
-if the Lord had only given us the Sabbath
It would have been enough…

But as we know, God didn’t stop with the Passover. The following day after Jesus celebrated Passover with His disciples, He also gave us His one and only Son that whosoever believed in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life.

Today, let us remember and not take for granted what the Lord has done for us.

Dayenu…it would have been enough.

So, what is your “Dayenu” statement? Take a minute to pause and reflect on how you would offer thanks to God today using the phrase “It would have been enough if the Lord had only…called me to teach…given me an example of grace to follow…or blessed me by waking me up this morning…”

Heavenly Father, Dayenu. It would have been enough if You had only offered me Your love, but You didn’t stop there, You offered Your one and only Son for the forgiveness of my sin. Thank you, Lord, for making a way to spend eternity in Heaven with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
