ON THE SIDE OF THE OPPRESSED

The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. Psalm 103:6, NIV

As educators, we encounter students who feel overlooked, isolated, misunderstood, or oppressed. Some carry burdens we know about, while others struggle with circumstances we may never fully see. They may be the students who sit alone, rarely speak up, or seem to have difficulty finding their place. Each day in our classrooms offers a unique opportunity to notice them.

While reaching out to students who are hurting or on the margins may not always come naturally or easily, Jesus calls us to see people the way He does. Throughout Scripture, we see Him move toward those who were overlooked, rejected, and pushed to the edges. He noticed the people others passed by. He listened to those who were dismissed. He welcomed those who felt like outsiders.

With Christ living in us, we can reflect that same love in our classrooms and schools.

This week, let’s make an intentional effort to look beyond the students who naturally draw our attention. Notice the one who seems disconnected. Sit beside the student who is often alone. Ask a question and genuinely listen to the answer. Create opportunities for students to know you care about them—not simply as learners, but as people created and loved by God.

You may never know how an act of kindness, a listening ear, or a few intentional minutes of attention can change a student’s day—or even their understanding of what it means to be loved.

Lord, thank You for the way You consistently move toward the oppressed, the overlooked, and the outcast. Open my eyes to the students who may be hurting or feeling alone. Show me whom You want me to seek out this week, and give me the compassion, courage, and patience to love them as You do. Help me reflect Your heart in the way I teach, listen, encourage, and care. Amen.
