“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31, NIV
Love God. Love your neighbor.
Jesus’ greatest commandments are remarkably simple to understand, yet they can feel incredibly difficult to live out. Every time I read this passage, I find myself asking:
- How do I love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength?
- How do I genuinely love others as I love myself?
- Why did Jesus place these two commands together?
Jesus gives us a beautiful glimpse of the answer in Matthew 25:31-46. He teaches that whatever we do for “the least of these,” we do for Him. When we care for others, encourage them, serve them, or meet their needs, we are expressing our love for Christ Himself.
Loving others won’t always come naturally. Some people are difficult to love, and some days our own hearts feel weary. But God doesn’t ask us to love in our own strength. He fills us with His love and empowers us through His Spirit to reflect His heart to those around us.
Today, ask God to help you love someone intentionally.
- Pray for—and if possible, with—someone.
- Listen carefully, not only to the other person, but also to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
- Ask God to reveal a need you can meet, then respond with compassion and generosity.
Heavenly Father, You are love! You are patient and kind. Your love never fails and endures forever! Fill me with Your love for others, especially those close to me. Open my eyes to see practical ways to show Your love to them today. May You be glorified in all I do today. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
