BEST-LAID PLANS

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love endures forever. Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior, gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.” 1 Chronicles 16:34-35, NIV

It’s that time of year—the crunch is on to finish our curriculum, complete assessments, and squeeze in a few of our favorite year-end activities. It also seems to be the time of year when the field trips, last-minute assemblies, and interruptions to our classrooms cause us the most frustration.

It reminds me of King David who planned to do an honorable thing by bringing home the Ark of the Covenant in 1 Chronicles 13. But in his excitement to return the Ark to Jerusalem, David forgot to follow God’s procedures, and sadly, a man died. David was so afraid and angry with God that he abandoned the project for three months! 1 Chronicles 15 tells us that when he decided to try again, he was very careful to follow everything the Lord required. Things were going great. The crowd was singing and dancing in celebration, and David was right there in their midst, praising God and dancing with all his might. Then his wife saw him, and the celebration was interrupted. She thought he looked like a dancing fool and told him so in front of everybody. But this time, David ignored the distraction and finished his journey.

Our best-laid plans are often interrupted or cut short. We can get frustrated or even angry; sometimes, we want to give up. But upon reflection, we usually decide to try again, maybe with a different strategy. We may still encounter obstacles or naysayers. But when this happens, we must press on anyway. Ask God for strength and deliverance, give thanks, and finish well!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to serve You as we educate students. Help us to be patient and courageous when we face obstacles. Help us to remember that people are more important than programs. Enable us to respond in ways that honor You so that You receive all the glory. Amen.
